Help Us Restore Fite House

In 2023, Opus 40 acquired Barbara and Harvey Fite’s private home, designed and built by Fite in the early 1940’s and always intended to be part of a unified Opus 40 site. Opus 40 and Bard College are combining forces to restore the house. However, before we can open the house to the public, it requires significant repairs and we are working on a restoration plan. Fite House, as we call it, is truly an artistic and historical tour de force — with hand-carved newel posts and door handles and 19th century quarrying tools adorning the building outside and in, serving practical and decorative roles.

We are asking for your help to restore this exquisite handmade home into a thriving year-round resource for Opus 40. We welcome gifts of any size and will happily honor your support at ceremonies and programs that celebrate the unification of our site.

A National Treasure right in Saugerties

Dubbed the Stonehenge of North America by some, the 6.5-acre earthwork sculpture Opus 40 in Saugerties, created by artist Harvey Fite over the course of nearly 40 years, strikes a balance between enchanting and slightly mysterious. — ‘Top Things to do in New York State,’ Lonely Planet

As I looked down the property’s main lawn, Opus 40 framed the majestic Overlook Mountain to the west, its peak wreathed in fog. The property remains imbued with Fite’s creativity and drive, which seemed to transfer to me as I walked around. — The Washington Post

“Seems incredible? That’s because it is. The lifetime work of one man, Opus 40 strikes visitors with its sheer vastness, its manmade design that somehow operates so harmoniously with the landscape that surrounds it.” – Hudson Valley Magazine

“In a culture of disposability,” notes David Wallis in The New York Times, “not only does Opus 40 constitute what Architectural Digest described as one of ‘the most beguiling works of art on the entire continent,’ but stands as a monument to discipline and hard work.”  — The New York Times
