All over the world, Covid-19 forces venues to close or limit operations for months or longer, forcing many to close and many more to furlough staff and cancel programs indefinitely.

Opus 40 is able not only to stay open but to develop programs that allow our audiences to escape the stress of quarantine, either virtually or in safe, socially distanced outdoor programs. We open with rigorous safety protocols around Covid-19 in June 2020, allowing visitors to access our remarkable space without fear of crowding. With free tickets available through local libraries and radio stations and for essential workers, our re-opening model receives praise in local press including The Daily Freeman, Hudson Valley Magazine, the Poughkeepsie Journal and Chronogram (to name a few).

In mid-June we develop a community plan to open our space, without charge, to a number of local businesses and nonprofits suffering from COVID closures —  including Bard College Conservatory, Bina’s Café, Dutch Ale House, Stockade Tavern, Teaching the Hudson Valley, and Vanaver Caravan. When Phase Four reopening measures are announced, our staff immediately reaches out to local artists and musicians about outdoor opportunities. We showcase work from three artists in outdoor exhibits and we book local musicians to perform every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Opus 40 also develops a remarkable array of online programs during the quarantine. Our Opus-Online Web pages bring artists and educators from around the world to our audiences, for free or sliding scale workshops and programs. We offer workshops led by artists around the United States as well as from India, Egypt and France.

In our nearly 40 years of operation, Opus 40 has hosted concerts from a range of remarkable performers. These performers have, in total, earned 93 Grammy Awards, 271 Grammy nominations, 23 Down Beat Awards for Best Performer, 8 NEA Awards, 3 W. C. Handy Awards, 1 Grammy Lifetime Award, 1 ASCAP Lifetime Award, 1 Kennedy Center Honors, 1 Academy Award, 3 Academy Award nominations, 1 National Medal of Arts, and 1 McArthur Genius Grant. They include 2 Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees and 3 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees…and counting!!
